Collaborative devising ensembles use many starting points, including text, images, music, news reports, poems, objects, nursery rhymes, games- anything that inspires them! There is no right or wrong for a starting point (as long as it is on the DP Theatre list!); but it should spark off lots of ideas and concepts.
Explore the possible starting points that your group chooses through games and exercises - watch the videos further down this page for examples and approaches or just for inspiration. Conduct as much independent research as you can, especially into practical ways of approaching devised theatre. Don't be afraid to mix and match, but don't forget to give credit where it's due; cite all of your sources.
We are all inspired by what we see and hear. Once you start devising you will find that you pull lots of little images and ideas together, and memories of moments, people, phrases and places will find their place in the creative process. Every time you examine a possible starting point make notes/images/voice recordings of everything that comes to mind, no matter how seemingly 'unrelated' at first.

“Collective Collaboration is collaboration in its purest form. In a company operating fully within this methodology, all of the members share equal responsibility for the creation of the work and take equal credit for the finished product"
