'Theatre is a dynamic, collaborative and live art form. It is a practical subject that encourages discovery through experimentation, the taking of risks and the presentation of ideas to others. It results in the development of both theatre and life skills; the building of confidence, creativity and working collaboratively.'
|
'The work of the director is central to the production of a play, since it is the director who sets the vision for the production for everyone involved.'
|
'In contemporary theatre, after the playwright, the director is generally the primary visionary, making decisions on the artistic concept and interpretation of the play and its staging.'
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Theatre_director 'The way you tell a story through action, movement, music, design, sound and lighting is just as important as the words.'

Plays do not exist in a 'vacuum'. Playwrights create theatre in RESPONSE to something that is happening. Criterion A is NOT necessarily about the physical setting of the play. For example, if you have chosen Romeo and Juliet, you would not write about Verona in Italy. You would write about WHY Shakespeare wrote this play; an English playwright working during the Renaissance, writing a tragedy set in Italy. Criterion A is NOT about the playwright’s life. It is about WHY the play came into existence. Why was the play written in that particular place in that particular time. E.g. Why was 4.48 Psychosis written in 19 in the UK? Depression etc is the playwright’s IDEAS. The cultural/theoretical context would be mental health acts, rates of suicide, perspectives on mental health in the UK at the time and in-yer-face Theatre as a movement. Criterion Bi is a record of your INITIAL ideas. What came to mind? What were your responses? How did you explore the play text? How did you engage with the text? You need to have a wide range of different ideas before you can sit down and formulate your final artistic/directorial intentions. Criterion B is where you record these explorations. 'I see', 'I think', 'I feel' etc. Images, diagrams, tension graphs, research into for props etc, characterisation ideas can all go here. The DN is NOT AN ESSAY! Criterion Bii is an analysis/deconstruction of how a director of a live theatre experience has staged a specific TEAM moment, combining production and performance elements. Remember you need to refer to two experiences, and you should write in detail (around 2 and a half pages) Criterion Cii is where you bring all of these disparate elements together and create an OVERALL intention (as well as explaining the intended IMPACT) for the play as a whole. Criterion Di - your chosen TEAM moments from the play should be quite short. But the explanation should be detailed for each; your work for D should be around 5 pages long. Criterion Dii As well as explaining how you would 'use performance and production (scenic and technical) elements in the two specific moments of the play to effectively create tension, emotion, atmosphere and/or meaning for the audience' you should also state an intention/impact statement for BOTH of the TEAM moments you have chosen. |
'The director’s vision is first fed by his or her detailed analysis of the script to be staged. After quite a few re-readings of the script, the director will begin to develop his or her vision of the playwright’s intention.
